Brimstone Uses Calcium Silicate Rocks

US alumina innovator Brimstone announced Wednesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Century Aluminum Corporation to establish a complete domestic bauxite-to-metal aluminum supply chain. Under the agreement, Brimstone will supply large quantities of alumina to Century Aluminum from its upcoming plant. The company expects the agreement to accelerate construction of its industrial-scale plant, scheduled for completion in 2034 with an annual output of approximately 350,000 tons of smelter-grade alumina. Currently, Brimstone is developing a commercial demonstration plant in Reno, Nevada, expected to commence operations in 2028.

US Aluminum Supply Chain Construction Significant, Short-Term Impact Limited

Brimstone stated its process eliminates the need for bauxite, as there are no economically minable bauxite reserves in the United States, instead choosing calcium silicate rocks as feedstock, which are widely available in the US. This project is significant for building the US domestic aluminum supply chain, but actual production start is far off, with limited short-term impact on the global aluminum market.
