Kyrgyzstan Coal Export Policy Adjustment
Kyrgyzstan implemented a six-month ban on road coal exports starting June 23. The ban applies to coal under customs codes 2701 and 2702, but transport through the Irkeshtan and Torugart ports remains unrestricted. These two ports are the main channels for the country's coal trade with China. State-owned producer Kyrgyzkomur and its Karaketcha coal mine were exempted and can continue road exports. The country plans to produce approximately 1.62 million tonnes of thermal coal from the Karaketcha mine this year, with output from new deposits reaching 2.2 million tonnes in 2025.
Indonesia Accelerates Coal Supply Contract Signing
In the first quarter of this year, Kyrgyzstan exported 294,000 tonnes of coal, a 1.1% year-on-year decline, including 15,000 tonnes exported to China. During the same period, it imported 425,200 tonnes from Kazakhstan, a significant 65% year-on-year drop. The country plans to increase domestic coal-fired power generation to reduce reliance on electricity imports, with its grid annual generation capacity at approximately 14.5 terawatt-hours. Regarding Indonesia, the Ministry of Energy accelerated the signing of medium-calorific value coal supply contracts to address Java grid power outages.
