Project Approval
On August 8, 2026, Canada approved the Crawford nickel project in Ontario, which combines nickel production with carbon sequestration technology. According to the project developer, the mine can permanently sequester up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year during operations, achieved by storing carbon dioxide in the ore.
Carbon Sequestration Capacity
The developer said that once the mine is operational, it could become one of the largest carbon sequestration facilities in North America. The project has received federal permits and is expected to attract billions of dollars in investment and supply nickel for electric vehicle batteries.
