Policy Challenge
On July 31, 2026, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita filed a legal challenge to a seven-year-old court order requiring one of the state's largest coal-fired units to be retired by a deadline. The two units at the Rockport power station near Evansville were assigned emission limits, with Unit 1 required to be retired, converted to another fuel, or retrofitted by the end of 2028. The order stems from a 2019 amendment to a consent decree, when the EPA was controlled by the pro-coal Trump administration and had said it was not seeking shutdown obligations.
