Malaysia Smelting Corp (MSC) said on 2026-08-19 that extreme rainfall forced a fresh stoppage at its century-old Rahman Hydraulic Tin (RHT) mine in Hulu Perak, Perak state. The company attributed the shutdown to a weather event on August 3, when about 60 mm of rain fell within one hour, exceeding the 50 mm maximum design capacity of the mine's existing drainage and tailings storage infrastructure. The downpour damaged part of the drainage system and inundated the tailings pond, according to MSC, and regulators found untreated water flowing directly into the river system.

MSC, which owns 80% of RHT, said repair and upgrade work has begun following a suspension order from the Minerals and Geosciences Department (MGD). The halt marks the second suspension at the mine in nine months, underscoring persistent weather-related disruption risk at one of Malaysia's major tin operations.
