Policy Warning
On August 5, 2026, Minerals Council South Africa told parliament that linking the granting of mining rights to beneficiation requirements could weaken South Africa's attractiveness as a destination for exploration and mining investment. Mzila Mthenjane, CEO of the Minerals Council, presented the industry's submissions on the cabinet-approved 2026 Industrial Development Strategy at a meeting of Parliament's Trade, Industry and Competition Committee.
Investment Impact
The strategy is built around decarbonization, diversification and digitalization, aiming to curb deindustrialization and revive manufacturing as a share of GDP. Mthenjane stressed that for policy to be legitimate, stakeholders need to be involved not only in its design but also in its implementation.
