On August 3, 2026, according to India's Business Line, Torrent Power plans to permanently close the 362 MW coal-fired AMGEN plant in the Sabarmati area of Ahmedabad in December 2030, replacing it with a larger thermal power unit that may be built outside Gujarat. The plant is one of the oldest still-operating power stations in India, located on the Sabarmati River, adjacent to the Sardar Patel Sports District being prepared for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and opposite the upcoming Sabarmati high-speed rail station.
Policy Constraints
Its closure will remove the last large coal-fired power station in downtown Ahmedabad. Torrent Power has applied for new coal quota nearly twice the existing capacity to replace the aging plant. The Gujarat government has approved the proposal and has submitted a request to the central government for coal allocation. The company said it will proceed with building the new unit once central approval for coal allocation is obtained.
