Policy Constraints
Zimbabwe's government has declared a "disaster status for urgent river ecosystem restoration" to address widespread degradation of river systems caused by legal and illegal mining activities. The declaration covers 17 rivers nationwide, including Mazowe, Murowodzi, Save, Angwa, Sanyati, Munyati, Mupfure, Umzingwane, Insiza, Manzimudaka, Mutebekwi, Mtshingwe, Mutare, Haroni and Nyamukwarara.
Environmental Risks
These rivers have suffered severe ecological damage, including biodiversity loss, siltation, altered water flow and pollution, largely stemming from poorly regulated mining operations. The announcement was published in a statutory instrument in a special government gazette on June 2. Civil society organizations are concerned that mining activities may continue under the guise of river restoration, further aggravating environmental damage while benefiting private interests.
